Nonprofit Merger Case Study: Mary Ryder Home - Provident Behavioral Health

In this nonprofit merger case study, we examine the Mary Ryder Home merging into the Provident Behavioral Health organization. This nonprofit merger is another example of two organizations coming together in order to better accomplish a common goal. On October 7, 2019, the Mary Ryder Home and Provident Behavioral Health announced their merging plan that would bring the Mary Ryder Home under the administration of Provident Behavioral Health. Remaining under the same name as a subsidiary, the Mary Ryder Home brought 90 years of experience to compliment Provident’s 160-year history. Now offering 250 years of experience to serve Missourians affected by the challenges of behavioral health, Provident Behavioral Health has complimented their infrastructure and programs with the senior care experience of the Mary Ryder Home. Additionally, the merger combined assets and infrastructure in order to better serve St. Louis’s growing elderly population. Blending a shared passion for service is incredibly important, but this merger also brought together serious assets and fundraising networks. The Mary Ryder Home brought its roughly $1.8 million annual revenue (in the four years prior to the merger) as well as $2.1 million in assets. This is an incredible financial complement to Provident’s already $4.8 million in assets. Provident also notably received over $5 million in revenue in 2018. 

Many believe that mergers are for the financially insolvent but both organizations were robust and successful. Combining for several reasons, this merger is another prime example of how combining organizations that complement each other is highly effective. Provident believes that although they have substantial resources and are successful with what they do, they could not have achieved the expanded services they now offer without the addition of the Mary Ryder Home save many more years of work. With the combination of the two nonprofit organizations, the services offered by Provident Behavioral Health are more comprehensive and those served by the Mary Ryder Home receive the benefits of a larger healthcare system. Their focus, serving the aging population of St. Louis,  is rapidly requiring more resources and experienced staff. Both of these features are foundational to the Mary Ryder Home. These features, combined with the expertise of both organizations make Provident Behavioral Health, in conjuncture with the Mary Ryder Home, an important and successful leader in serving the elderly. 

With several nonprofit mergers already covered, this is just another prime example of two organizations with shared goals coming together to better support their goals in a more sustainable environment. The Mary Ryder Home was successful in its fundraising and service offerings but combined with the resources and network of Provident Behavioral Health, both organizations’ impact experienced an extension beyond its prior range. Achieved through greater sector efficiency, the Mary Ryder Home and Provident Behavioral Health nonprofit merger represents the success of strategic planning and combined efforts.
